Manish Malhotra Speaks About Designing Aishwarya Rai in Fanney Khan

Former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be seen sharing screen-space with one of the most talented actors in Bollywood right now – Rajkummar Rao (sorry SRK, Salman Bhai; he’s way better at acting than you guys). Directed by Atul Manjrekar, Fanney Khan is the official remake of the Belgian satirical comedy film Everybody’s Famous! (2000), directed by Dominique Deruddere about a young teenage girl who is pushed by her poor parents to become a musical star. Fanney Khan is scheduled for a worldwide release on 3rd August, 2018.

The trailer of Fanney Khan was released a few days ago and Aishwarya Rai looks gorgeous as ever as pop sensation Baby Singh. But, of course, she does; her wardrobe was designed by the master designer Manish Malhotra himself! The duo have a long-standing partnership – from films, runway shows and even red-carpet appearances. Channelling her inner Beyoncé, Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez all rolled into one, Aish looks glamorous in her fiery-red hair, spangled on-stage costumes and off-duty camo jackets. Vogue India spoke to the designer about designing Aishwarya Rai in Fanney Khan. Here are a few excerpts from the interview-

When you first heard about the character Baby Singh, what was the image that came to your mind?

Baby Singh is a very popular singer. She’s got the superstardom of what Aishwarya has in person and she also has the heart—she’s soft, she’s young and she is warm, and it’s very close to Aishwarya’s personality. Aishwarya is very warm, she has a lovely laugh, she’s intelligent and has maintained her friendships and relationships over many years, so I felt there was a nice parallel there.

Were you influenced by any female pop stars when styling Baby Singh?

My mood board had everyone from Beyoncé to Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez. What we took from them was the glitz and glamour but added a touch of reality to it. And if you notice, Aishwarya’s costumes have brought that in.

Baby Singh is every guy’s dream girl, much like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is in real life. Did you bring in aspects of her personal character in the looks?

I think Aishwarya and I were really keen on getting out the reality aspect of a superstar. People might see her as an achiever or a megastar, but she is also very human. She is in touch with day-to-day fashion like every other girl. So there are lots of jeans, sneakers and a lot of happy, fun clothes as well.

What does Baby Singh’s wardrobe look like?

We were very keen that we didn’t want to do the stereotypical star. Aishwarya wears everything from a camouflage jacket, ripped jeans, big sunglasses and tracksuits to very a simple jeans and shirt look. There is a lot of high street [style], but it’s also a lot of high fashion. People see stars as divas, but they are human too and that’s what we are trying to portray in the film. She’s done up in two of the songs, but it’s not unrealistic. You could wear the looks to a crazy party. If you see the other songs, it’s all sequins—sequinned blazers, jackets and jumpsuits. Internationally too, sequins are making a huge comeback—the whole ’80s influence is evident.

How have you factored in Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s dramatic hair while creating the looks for her?

I think the hair was more of Aishwarya; she wanted to do like this big hair. When she showed the hair to me, I was like yes, we should go ahead with it. I think she carries it off really well.

What is your working relationship with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan like?

Aishwarya got in touch with me and spoke to me about this film. I’ve worked a lot with Aishwarya before—I’ve known her for many years of course, and she’s a very close friend. She’s someone I admire for her work ethic.
